Botox® Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox® is a cosmetic injectable that primarily treats dynamic wrinkles in a medical spa setting. Botox and comparable products like Jeuveau® contain a neuromodulator called botulinum toxin, which stops motor nerve signals from causing muscle contractions.

You may wonder what muscle contractions have to do with the creases that appear on your face over time. Many fine lines, called dynamic wrinkles, show up and deepen over time because of the repeated facial expressions you make.

For example, you develop frown lines when you frown or furrow your brow often. You might even make these expressions subconsciously. Eventually, your skin loses its ability to bounce back from these wrinkles.

Ms. Sanchez injects Botox with a gentle hand. She makes sure the product affects only the nerves she intends to target; overdoing it could leave you with a “frozen” or expressionless look.

You’ll still be able to move many of the muscles in your face so you can express yourself while Botox is active, but the injections smooth out your targeted dynamic wrinkles.

What does Botox treat?

Botox treats several facial features, most of which are common fine lines that indicate your age. Cosmetic Botox can temporarily eliminate:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Chin dimples

The results of Botox last for up to four months. Once they’re gone, it’s up to you to decide if you want to come back to CynSational Aesthetics for touch-up injections so you can enjoy wrinkle-free skin for a longer time period.

How should I prepare to get Botox?

Preparing for Botox involves a consultation at CynSational Aesthetics so Ms. Sanchez can evaluate your health. First and foremost, she determines whether you’re a good candidate for Botox injections and that they won’t cause any harm to your health.

When she is sure it’s right for you, Ms. Sanchez gives you instructions to follow as the date of your treatment gets closer. She may advise you to:

  • Stop using blood-thinning medications
  • Avoid certain supplements
  • Stop using retinol and other irritating topicals
  • Avoid drinking alcohol for 48-72 hours before the appointment

You can anticipate returning to your typical routine right away after Botox injections. However, you should avoid rubbing or massaging the treatment areas, as these actions can spread the medication into other muscles.
